Shibari Bondage for Relaxation and Power Play

If you’re exploring how to use techniques from bondage for relaxation read on…

Bondage and Leadership: Exploring Control and Release

In high-powered leadership roles, control often becomes second nature. But what happens when we consciously choose to relinquish it? Bondage—especially in the ritualized practice of Shibari—offers a potent mirror for the power dynamics we navigate daily. It reveals where we grip too tightly, where we fear surrender, and where vulnerability might be the key to deeper connection and self-awareness. Very often we don’t negotiate our personal relationships with the same care and attention as our business contracts, leading to unmet needs, miscommunication and conflict. I believe that everyone can learn something about navigating healthy relationships and setting boundaries from negotiating a rope bondage contract.

My Experience with Suspension

My own exploration with Christian Red—a renowned rope artist—offered a transformative perspective. During our suspension scenes, I wasn’t just being tied; I was being witnessed, held, and invited into radical trust. These weren’t just erotic experiences—they were relational contracts, negotiated with care and attunement. They mirrored the negotiations I guide my clients through in therapy: around boundaries, needs, and emotional safety. Rope bondage for me embodies art, mindfulness, intention and connection.

Tips for the Curious, Discerning Professional

  1. Start with the Why – Are you seeking surrender, bondage for relaxation, sensation, clarity, or catharsis? Let intention lead.
  2. Negotiate Clearly – In both leadership and bondage, clarity creates freedom. Discuss limits, desires, and aftercare.
  3. Work with Practitioners Who Honour Consent – Christian Red’s work exemplifies deep listening and skill. Choose partners who treat your body and psyche with reverence.
  4. Reflect Post-Scene – What did you learn about control? About trust? About your emotional patterns?

Neurodivergence, Sensation, and the Rope

For those of us who are neurodivergent (me!)—especially with ADHD or autism—rope play can offer profound sensory regulation, emotional processing, and embodied grounding. The structure and ritual of bondage can calm a dysregulated nervous system, while the intimacy of negotiated power exchange can help unravel masking and create safe space for authenticity.

Therapy Meets Kink-Informed Practice

In my hypnotherapy and coaching work, I help clients integrate experiences like these—not just for erotic exploration, but for emotional growth, nervous system regulation, and relational healing. Kink is a language of truth-telling. And sometimes, the most powerful thing a leader can do is to loosen their grip.
