Help with Binge Drinking

Binge drinking can feel like an endless cycle—one that starts with a few drinks for relaxation and quickly spirals into excessive alcohol consumption. If you find yourself regularly drinking more than you intended and struggling to regain control, you’re not alone. The good news? Change is possible, and with the right support, you can break free from binge drinking for good.

Understanding Binge Drinking

Binge drinking is defined as consuming large amounts of alcohol in a short period, often leading to risky behaviour, emotional distress, and long-term health consequences. Many people turn to alcohol as a way to cope with stress, anxiety, or social pressure, but over time, it becomes a habit that’s hard to break. We live in a tragic society that mocks drunken behaviours, praises people for drinking the most, and shuns and teases those that don’t drink. All of which promote and encourage a society of ‘big drinkers’. If you’re seeking help with binge drinking, I’ve been there, I am out of the other side and can help you. Read on…

My Journey from binge drinker, to alcohol free, then conscious drinking

I come from a family of big drinkers and had been periodically drinking alcohol to excess since I was 13. After the birth of my daughter in 2017, I had my first night our when she was 3 weeks old, and after then it became a weekly event, as I juggled single motherhood with running my businesses and my poor mental health. Babysitters often stayed overnight as I rocked in at 3am, leaving them to get up and feed/change my daughter. She was 1 when an afternoon pub lunch turned into an 8-hour drinking binge as I left her playing on the pub playground, keeping a very loose, drunken eye on her and the other children.

A talking to by my mum after I rocked in bladdered to fall asleep with my daughter in my arms gave me the wake up call I needed to address this toxic way of life.  I decided at that moment I did not want my daughter to witness and learn this destructive behaviour from me. It was time to break the cycle.

There were a number of factors that helped me let go of binge drinking…

    1. I experienced my first alcohol free festival ‘Buddhafields’  (we go every year now) and it opened my eyes to the wonders and joy of experiencing socialising without alcohol.
    2. Reading Russell Brands book Freedom from our Addictions made me decide that I 100% wanted to cut out alcohol and let go of my dependency.
    3. To break the habit, I signed up to commit to ‘One Year No Beer’ (and did almost 2 years in the end).
    4. A combination of hypnotherapy with Inner Child Healing helped me heal allowing me to emotionally manage my life without seeking escapism and helped me remove my limiting beliefs around alcohol.

Practical Steps to Regain Control and start living your best life

If you’re looking for help with binge drinking, here are some practical strategies:

  • Identify Triggers – Recognise the situations, emotions, or environments that lead you to drink excessively.
  • Drink a glass of tap water or soda water after every drink – this rehydrates you and stops you drinking more alcohol (that dehydrates you) in a fruitless attempt to hydrate.
  • Explore alcohol free drinks – They do offer a placebo affect and help in a social situation. If you usually drink gin try having the tonic on its own, or try an AF beer.
  • Set Limits – Decide in advance how many drinks you’ll have and stick to it.
  • Find Alternatives – Replace drinking with healthier coping mechanisms like exercise, meditation, or creative activities.
  • Stay Accountable – Let friends or family members know about your goals and seek their support.
  • Practice Mindfulness – Pay attention to your drinking habits and how alcohol affects your mood and body.
